Rekhachithram (The Portrait) is a 2025 Malayalam mystery crime drama directed by Jofin T. Chacko. The film is a unique "alternate history" thriller that intertwines a present-day police investigation with the events of a 1985 film shoot. Starring Asif Ali and Anaswara Rajan, the narrative follows a police officer reopening a cold case related to the disappearance of a junior artist from the sets of the classic movie Kathodu Kathoram.
On Rekhachithram, the visual effects team faced the unique challenge of recreating the specific look and feel of 1980s Kerala on a tight budget. Mindstein Studios played a critical role in this endeavor, delivering high-end AI-driven visual effects that have been hailed as superior to those in massive-budget productions.
Mindstein Studios was the primary VFX partner entrusted with the film's most ambitious task: digitally recreating the 1985 avatar of legendary actor Mammootty. Mindstein employed a hybrid approach using AI face-swapping technology and body doubles to bring the vintage version of the actor back to the screen for a pivotal cameo. We are grateful to have played a part in this nostalgic moment, working to ensure the vintage avatar felt authentic and seamless within the film's narrative rather than just a technical showcase. Cookie FX was the additional VFX partner who contributed towards the films VFX requirements.
Beyond the character work, the team was responsible for the "invisible" world-building required to sell the period setting. This included digitally reconstructing demolished heritage buildings and scrubbing modern elements from frames to maintain historical authenticity.
